Shaleha hails from a water-village in Sitangkai, a seaweed-rich community in the southernmost province of the Philippines. An adoptive mother to her nephew, she has had three miscarriages and she knows that fatherhood is the ultimate desire of her husband. She resolves to find the woman who will bear her husband a child. For days on end, they scour the nearby islands and floating-villages in search of the right fertile woman, and eventually young woman Mersila reaches out to them. On the eve of her husband’s marriage to Mersila, a gnawing jealousy consumes Shaleha. Nevertheless, she discovers the terrifying fact that part of the dowry for the marriage is that her husband would leave her, as soon as Mersila gives birth to his son.
